Art

 Mrs. Jean Maniscalco

As an artist and teacher my inspiration has always stemmed from the quote “Art is the signature of societies”. The story of societies both past and present is told through their art which remains long after the people have perished. It is through the study of their art that we can learn much about how other peoples lived, what they ate, what they wore, what they looked like, who their enemies and allies were, their customs, their likes and their dislikes. It is through the study of art of societies past that we structure much of a school’s daily curriculum. Think about world history and the Ancient Civilizations such as Greece, Rome and Egypt. Our knowledge of those cultures comes directly from the study of their art and architecture. Consider Leonardo Da Vinci, an artist, an inventor, a mathematician, and an engineer. Have you heard of the Italian mathematician, Fibonnaci? His mathematical discoveries changed the art world forever. Art spills over into every aspect of our lives…knowingly or not.

Lesson plans in art class at St. Mary of the Hills are based not only on the study of art history, but also the application of the elements of art and the principles of design. The introduction of a variety of media and techniques, combined with regular artistic challenges designed to expand the imaginative capacity of students all come together to make a unique and and rewarding art experience at every grade level.
