ACADEMICS Religion The curriculum covers the study of Creation, the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and how to apply them to everyday life. English The focus on grammar is parts of speech ( specifically : nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs), capitalization, and punctuation. Composition focus is on letter writing (First Friday Friends - writing a monthly letter to members of the parish), and developing well written paragraghs. Reading There are several components to the reading program: an anthology of thematic stories including mysteries, plays, poetry, and pourquoi tales; a workbook that focuses on developing a variety of skills including, but not limited to, main idea/detail, summarizing, inference, fantasy/reality, compare/contrast, and thesaurus/dictionary use; a series of booklets focusing on reading comprehension; increasing vocabulary (Wordly Wise); and assigned book reports covering several different genres. Spelling The program covers a weekly phonetic lesson culminating in a weekly test. Handwriting Students will review, practice, and demonstrate the correct usage of both upper and lower case letters in cursive. Mathematics Children will be able to identify place value and the value of a particular digit in a nine digit number. The students will be able to compare and round whole numbers and estimate and solve equations. The students will add and subtract whole numbers with/without regrouping, multiply by three digits, and divide by two digits. The students will be introduced to fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, geometry, and measurement. Social Studies The students will develop a use of map and globe skills, have a thorough knowledge of the fifty states and their capitals, be able to recognize the regions of the United States and their identifiable characteristics and importance. The students will learn to organize information and knowledge for various research projects throughout the year. Science The children will be studying Earth Science (The Atmosphere & Beyond), Physical Science (The Nature of Matter), and Life Science (Organization of Living Things; Ecosystems).Class instruction includes lecture, note-taking, videos, and "mini experiments". The students also have the opportunity to present their own experiments by volunteering to be "Scientist of the Day". |
