ACADEMICS Religion Great emphasis is placed on helping the students gain a strong understanding of our religion’s beliefs and traditions. The content areas include teaching about the fundamental virtues, the understanding of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, prayers, the Bible, and several pertinent vocabulary words. Reading The purpose of the reading program is to read with fluency and for the students to develop strong comprehension skills. Students will review readiness skills, vowels (long and short), word patterns (linguistics), and other reading-related information—contractions, compound words, inference, sequence, blends, cause/effect, and organizing information for stories using graphic organizers. Writing Students are encouraged to apply the skills learned through reading in their writing. Writing a story with age-appropriate organization and mechanics is the ultimate goal. Language Students learn to write effectively in a risk-free environment. Inventive spelling is a part of the learning process. Students are exposed to sequencing of stories (i.e., beginning, middle, end). Students will apply phonetic rules to decode words. Mathematics The purpose of the math curriculum is to master number operations at the conceptual, connecting, and symbolic levels. Content areas include numeral recognition, numeral writing, addition, subtraction, graphing, sorting, patterning, place value, measurement, and money. Social Studies The focus on Self and Family includes an emphasis on understanding the specific roles in the family, school, community, and church groups and how basic needs are met. Through hands-on activities, literature, and real-life experiences; students learn about the family as a basic unit of society, simple geographic concepts, the need for laws and rules, and the values guiding our life and work together. Science Students will learn about living and non-living things in the enviroment.
They will learn about the similarities and differences amongst plant species
and familiar animals. Students will grow to appreciate their human ability
to think and communicate as well as to appreciate the ever-changing nature
of the universe. |
