ST. MARY'S STUDENTS CELEBRATE FIELD DAY School spirit was alive on Friday, May 22, 2009, as students at St. Mary of the Hills lathered on the sunscreen and threw themselves into a day of tug-of-war competitions, relay races and obstacle courses to celebrate the end of the school year, at their annual Field Day. Thanks to Mr. A., St. Mary’s P.E. instructor, students in pre-kindergarten through grade 8, faculty and over fifty parent volunteers traveled through 21 different events on the school's beautiful playground, each with a different game or activity, while St. Mary’s dad, Mr. Gib Gailius, provided music and entertainment. “We feel so fortunate to have Mr. A as part of our team this year,” said Pam Vasta, principal Pre-k through Grade 4. Ara Asadoorian arrived in September and quickly became part of the St. Mary’s family. Aside from teaching physical education, he began a coed after school hockey, flag football and baseball program, he hosted a family night at the Bruins and even got the faculty and staff into shape by hosting early morning workouts. “What a tremendous gift he is to our school” says Mrs. Vasta. Among the many activities, students enjoyed potato sack races, shuffleboard, horseshoes, golf, a long jump and face painting. After competing with their classes in relays and races, students were treated to a catered BBQ luncheon by Fasano’s Catering. The day was complete with a school-wide game show and concluded with students competing in a kickball tournament. In the words of one fourth grader: “It was the best field day ever!” |
