| On Wednesday, April 30, 2008, St. Mary of the Hills School was full
of excitement as a result of both their annual Academic Night, and their
annual Middle School Science Fair. Academic Night featured each grade
showcasing a variety of Science curriculum activities that have been studied
this year. The displays were done in a way that totally engaged the visitors
to the school.
Visitors that entered the Early Childhood Center saw that it was transformed into a Children’s Museum with all hands-on activities. The First Grade displayed their imagination with their Invention Convention. When parents went up to the second floor of the school, they viewed the Second Grade display on Oceanography that featured a class-sized aquarium. Third Graders displayed projects on Ecosystems that included a tropical rainforest, and visitors were astonished that they were in classrooms that literally were transformed into impressive hands-on visual displays. The Fourth Grade had a variety of interactive activities that included mini-experiments based on mass, volume, density, and solutions, as well as human body projects. Three performances took place in the Fifth Grade classroom that were dramatic reenactments of man’s first walk on the moon – the 1969 Apollo 11 Space Mission. Our Middle School students had the opportunity to display their Science Projects that they had been working on since January. Science Teachers, Ms. Frossard and Mrs. Marotta, were very proud of all of the research, work and scientific method that the students followed. Mrs. Mary Ellen McDermott, the Math Curriculum Director for the Milton Public Schools, was asked to be one of the judges. She stated, “I am so impressed with the students maturity, work ethic, and their desire to learn. The projects were incredibly well done and followed the scientific method. It was heartwarming to see one of your former students who loves science follow their dream and impart their love of learning to the next generation.” It should be noted that Mrs. McDermott was Ms. Frossard’s Science Teacher at Pierce Middle School. The 7th and 8th Grade student winners of the Science Fair were announced to the school community at the Ascension Thursday Liturgy, which was hosted by the Third Grade. Mrs. Vasta, Principal of St. Mary of the Hills School, was filled with pride for both her students and staff. “I am privileged to work with such hard working students and teachers,” said Vasta. At that time, she called up Ms. Katie Frossard, who is in her first year as seventh and eighth grade science teacher. Frossard was clearly impressed with the entire body of work that the students produced in their projects, “Not only did they have great ideas, but great execution and solid testing as well.” |
