| The fourth grade at St. Mary of the Hills school has been working on
a project this year with a rather flat young man named, Flat Stanley.
As part of their integrated reading, writing, and social studies programs,
the students have read a funny book called Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown.
The book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished
“as flat as a pancake” when a bulletin board falls on him.
His parents send him off in the mail to visit relatives.
Our class decided to do the same with their “Flat Stanleys.” All the students sent their Flat Stanleys to different locations. Most are visiting different states within the US, but some are traveling internationally to places like Scotland, Jamaica, Ireland, Dominica, and Canada. Some of them have returned safely with tales of their visits to their various destinations. One of the students, Corridon Petchell, sent her Stanley to visit with “Wally the Green Monster” at Fenway Park. He came back with autographed postcards for the entire class and many pictures of him and Wally around the Park. The students have learned much from their Stanleys’ adventures and enjoy sharing them with each other. |
